PBS Great American Read - Lonesome Dove

Here's one of the books I chose as a favorite, although I enjoyed the TV mini-series even more. This story has it all and while it is slanted towards a man's point of view, it does have many touching moments and quite a bit about relationships.

Truth be told, Lonesome Dove can be called a romantic story wrapped up in a western, although it is much more than that, because it is a story about life and the human condition, as all great stories are.

Gus tries to get Lori in the sack, and succeeds.

I think Robert Duval is at his best in this scene as the philosophical Gus McCrea. Diane lane is charming, beautiful, and heartwarming in all her scenes.

Lonesome Dove is one of the great American stories ever put to paper or screen by the one and only Larry McMurtry who has penned so many amazing stories and deserves a big mention.

All the stories chosen as the great American read are chosen for good reason, but it all comes down to numbers, I suspect. Most readers (70%) are female and so I have a feeling Jane Austin will do well when all is said and done. Fair enough, I suppose.

This seems like one of PBS's
most ambitious fundraisers

This seems like one of PBS's most ambitious fundraisers (*sorry to break the news) but probably not one of its most profitable. In reality, PBS is aiming to broaden their demographic base with this series and it seems to be working so far. You don't have to be a genius to figure that one out. Just take a look at their color palette (a variety of pastel colors) that appeals to both women and children for the most part and one of the reasons I've been so distant from the start. (Surprise! I'm not a woman or a child.)

Let's face it, PBS is not trying to appeal to men (except with video excerpts by male authors, wink, wink) because their demographic base is women and children. Again, in the marketing world, this is not a newsflash. It's more like rule #1.

Okay, enough of that. I have several other favorite books. Some of them are even written by female authors. Imagine that.

We'll see which one is the winner soon enough. And just for fun, I'll post my most likely book to win next time. Think of the favorite book of a middle-aged white female and you might come close.

Time will tell if I am sexist enough or not.

(BTW, I've been busy writing a story of my own (and all but finished) so that's why I haven't been around in a while. You can put away your box of Kleenex now. Thank you.)

*Everything is a fundraiser in one form or another. Either you give or you take, there's nothing else.
